INDONESIA LEARNS FROM RWANDA MILITARY HOSPITAL THE NEW TECHNIQUE OF CIRCUMCISION PREPEX

A delegation from the Indonesian Ministry of Health paid an official visit to the PrePex Center of Excellence at Rwanda Military Hospital.

This visit comes at a time when the Indonesian Ministry of Health, GadjaMada University and the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI)

together with Provincial Health Offices, and national and local AIDS

Commissions are planning a feasibility and acceptability pilot study on HIV prevention using PrePex metod of circumcision to be conducted

in the Indonesian provinces of Papua and West Papua. The HIV/AIDS prevalence rates are continually rising in both provinces and there is a

large un-circumcised adult male population that may benefit from male circumcision.

Colonel Dr. Ben Karenzi, RMH Commandant welcomed the delegation upon arrival to Rwanda and said that RMH is happy to share knowledge with

visitors as this is not RMH private knowledge, but knowledge for all humanity.

The delegation, comprising of Ministry officials, religious and tribal leaders, physicians and nurses, met with the Rwandan Minister of

Health and learned about best practices in PrePex implementation and demand creation from the PrePex professionals. We are a government

believing in science and innovation, so PrePex was studied here and validated here. Said the Hon. Minister of Health Dr. Agnes BINAGWAHO.

She insisted on the fact that the success to implement Prepex as a new method of circumcision is due to seriousness of stakeholders

We are just serious. As a government, we work as one; there are good relationships and coordination within the different Ministries

and our resources are our people. said the Hon.MOH.

Delegates also visited the Rutare Health Center where they spoke with PrePex clients, providers, community health workers and local

religious leaders about male circumcision.

This professional visit provided a unique, overall view of the successful PrePex scale-up strategy and implementation in Rwanda.

On their return to Papua-Indonesia, delegates will be well equipped to apply their newly-acquired knowledge in their own communities

and to implement effective HIV-prevention strategies using the simple, safe and scalable solution provided the by the PrePex device.
